The Lithium Chemical Plant near the city of Antofagasta (Salar del Carmen area) processes concentrated lithium brine from the Salar de Atacama into lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide. Production capacity has been progressively expanded: lithium carbonate 48ktpa (2011), with current effective capacity of 210ktpa Li2CO3 (plans for 240ktpa by 2026); lithium hydroxide capacity 40ktpa following 2022 expansion. Lithium carbonate production began here in 1996; lithium hydroxide production started 2005.
